A fashion company in Hungary wants to challenge centuries-old ideas about the country’s Roma minority. Another goal of the company, Romani Design, is to make a place in the world of high fashion for this historically marginalized group.

In 2010 when Erika and Helena Varga established Romani Design, they were clear about their goals. They want to use fashion and other arts to build social and cultural standing of the Roma community. They also want to re-establish Roma culture in modern terms.

“We were one of the first brands that actually gave the answer to how to rebuild (Roma) traditions in a contemporary, modern way,” said Erika Varga, co-founder of Romani Design.

Stella McCartney took a near £2.7m salary from her fashion company last year, up more than £220,000 on the year before, while the business claimed almost £850,000 in support from the government’s furlough scheme.

The designer’s pay went up despite a 26% fall in sales to £28.4m in the year to 31 December 2020, as sales in the UK more than halved, while the company recorded a pre-tax loss of £31.4m, according to accounts for Stella McCartney Limited filed at Companies House. The group made a £33.4m pretax loss the year before.

The accounts show McCartney’s label, in which she sold a minority stake to the French luxury goods conglomerate LVMH in 2019, said it was dependent on additional funds being provided by its new shareholder in order to remain a going concern.

AS A KID growing up in Detroit in the 1970s, Anna Sui knew she wanted to be a fashion designer. She was especially drawn to the colorful designs of Biba, a British brand influential in the ’60s and ’70s. At the Bergdorf Goodman Biba boutique, her mom bought her a teal T-shirt with billowy sleeves along with matching eye shadow. “That was it for me. I’d never seen anything like Biba,” recalled Ms. Sui. “The makeup counter [at the New York store] was art deco, decorated with plumes of black ostrich feathers. You were used to seeing blue eye shadow, but these were smoke and maroon and teal and plum, and the clothes were all the same colors with matching boots and matching hats.”

Because of the unpredictable nature of the fashion industry, fashion brands often have to ‘guestimate’ demand for their products, and if they get that demand wrong, they have to deal with the wasted inventory. All too often clothes end up being incinerated unnecessarily, adding to their environmental impact. UK startup Purple Dot has an ecommerce ‘waitlist and pre-order’ platform, allowing fashion brands to only produce the exact volume of goods ordered, thereby cutting down waste.

Purple Dot has now raised a $4 million early stage funding round led by US-based Unusual Ventures. Previous investors Connect Ventures, Moxxie Ventures, and the family office of Indeed co-founder Paul Forster also participated.
